RaptorRex has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I'm new here. I was just over at the code catacombs and see the last web-related code posted there is from 2002. Is that accurate? Is there really so little interest in Perl for the web? I was going to post a rather large suite but would there be any point?

    The "little stuff" is a fairly completely solved space. The big stuff is too big to post here. Take a look at Catalyst or Jifty or BigTop. They don't belong here, because they need to be some place where they can be easily installed, and "install from monks" is not an option I can give most of my clients. {grin}

Also, I believe your "2002" is inaccurate. I know I've posted stuff here in the last year or so that relates to HTML scraping and parsing, or dealing with web-related issues. Maybe you're just looking for "complete CGI scripts", which I would agree are not that popular any more.

I have to agree with merlyn (not that he needs my agreement) with regard to the "little stuff", but I would also point to this from The Guide to the Monastery:
Code Catacombs - The place to put your full-blown programs and scripts that others might find useful.

As to more recent posts, IIRC, my last post before this one was in response to an html question; albeit, one the OP could have solved with a seach here or a more diligent reading of documentation.

You might wish to search on terms including some particularly related to your "suite" -- it may well be a significant contribution -- and just possibly might find additional posts by searching for nodes with "RFC" in their titles.

      So, welcome to the Monastery!

On top of the fact that merlyn is correct — ie, cool projects get their own webspace...

The code catacombs and snippets sections are usually full of junk and are a terrible example of anything, much less as a measure of interest in anything. They're really full of as much garbage and poorly formatted whitespace as they are useful code.

That's a generalization. I've wasted many hours on things like Genetic Programming or breeding Perls. Although, that's not in the code sections either. Huh.

        Might be actually true.

But while you can easily check for yourself in CUFP or Snippets the "Categories" links at the top of the Code section give the impression (when followed), that no post was made after 2002 for that particular category (any category), as observed in the OP for CGI Programming.

Looks like a bug in the presentation of the data to me.

    Hi RaptorRex, Sure, there's interest.

The reason that you don't see all that much about web stuff on Perlmonks is that this is a pretty mature area: there's a couple of modules that have most of the problems in this area pretty well nailed down.

(And as someone else points out above, the Code section of Perlmonks is pretty quiet anyway).

But if you've got something else to add, then post away by all means!

    Best wishes, andye

To examine the analogy more thoroughly, the real catacombs were for the burial of the dead. What I am trying to say is: This isn't suggestive to me of any "noticeboard" sort of purpose, but of a rather static repository.
