Spreadsheet::ParseExcel is looking for a maintainer

szabgab has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

A couple of months ago when there were some bugs in Spreadsheet:ParseExcel that were making trouble for me I asked for the maintainership of the module.

I have added some tests (that means now all the test reports fail) and fixed some of the issues but eventually I must admit I don't have time for it. So I am looking for someone to maintain it.

OK, so I removed the tests that were failing and put IO::Scalar back as a prereq even though Spredsheet::ParseExcel does not need it on modern versions of perl but one of the prereqs of SPE needs in and does not say so. Actually that was the reason of most of the failing tests.

0.31 is on CPAN and in a few days I'll release the previous version as a development version. We'll see.

Hi Gabor, Unfortunately at the moment the extra (failing) tests are preventing the module from installing without FORCE, which is actually causing me more problems than the bugs themselves. I appreciate why you have added those tests, but would it be possible for you to remove them from the production version and instead put them into a development version of the module? This will enable users who are not affected by the bugs to still install the module cleanly, while also providing visibility of development to those users who are affected. I'm with jj808. I've just landed a new client whose source data for a mission critical process comes from an Excel workbook, and the application I'm writing will have to be installed upon machines to which I have no access. It'd make them awfully nervous if I told them to ignore the test failures and force the thing.	[reply]

I second the previous agonized screams from other posters. PLEASE remove your failing tests from the production code on CPAN before you drop this. Having just had a new baby, I can appreciate the "don't have time now" issue, but I also have hundreds of people out there building on firewall-blocked systems which don't have easy upgradeability and users who are savvy enough to apply FORCE or build manually.
