I may be wrong here, 5.6 is ancient memories for me, but isn't it "use Threads" back in 5.6? Capital T ?

Upgrade to a recent 5.8 version of Perl, if you want good results with threads.

isn't it "use Threads" back in 5.6 It is, but the old Threads model has been deprecated since perl 5.8, and as far as I know never worked well anyway. If you want to use ithreads (which is what "use threads" does in 5.8+) you should probably use the latest stable perl. "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"
