    RL has nailed it. Compare, 

    $ perl -e'sleep 1, print "\r$_" for 1..10; print $/'

    [download]
    to, 
    $ perl -e'$| = 1; sleep 1, print "\r$_" for 1..10; print $/'

    [download]
