• getting indices sorted by value: my @indices = sort { $a[$a] <=> $a[$b] } 0..$#a;
• initialize hash elements: @hash{@array} = (1) x @array
• assign empty string defaults: $_ = '' for grep ! defined ( $foo, $bar, $baz );
