I'm on linux and opening a file with a space at the end (of the filename, I'm assuming) works fine.

perl -e 'open F,"<","Journal-B " or die $!'

succeeds.

Are you sure "Journal-B " is a file? For instance, it shouldn't be a dangling soft-link.
