I remember a story about a bachelor, who liked balogna so much, he ate nothing but bologna sandwiches, morning, noon and night. He lived to be as long and healthy as anyone else. (A testament to the adaptive abilities of the human body) :-)

    story? as in anecdotal heresay? or as in documented and verifiable?

    And dont forget, he is doomed to be reincarnated as a pig for 40,000 more lifetimes as a result. (grin)

      Well it's documented somewhere. It was on a National TV news broadcast about 25 years ago, before google. They were doing a segment on Health and just pointed out this guy. (Sort of like 100 year old's who drink and smoke). He was slim, so he didn't overeat it. Of course, it may have been all an "infomercial sponsored by the Bologna Institute of America" :-)

      I'm beginning to realize that most of the problem is caused by statistical analysis, where the government wants to treat us all the same, like we are a big herd of homogenous cattle. The reality is there are different genetic branches in humans. Some are good on fruit and bread, some on fats and meat. Look at the eskimos. They do fine living in igloos and living on pure blubber and meat. Take that away and give them American food and Twinkies, they become fat and diabetic.

      It always reminds me of that Woody Allen movie "Sleeper" where a Health Food store owner, is frozen and woken up 300 years later, only to find out that the scientists had finally realized that the real health food is "milkshakes and french fries".

      Of course, I don't dispute the karmic problem, but that is between you and the universe. :-)

        Well, I have thought a lot about this. In terms of barest essentials for survival, we are 99 percent the same because 99% of what is needed over a 3 week period for survival is sunlight, air and water. There is no food substance whose lack within a 3-week period, for any genetic strain, will lead to long-term health defects.
        The reality is there are different genetic branches in humans. Some are good on fruit and bread,
        Fruit _and_ bread?! Fruit yes. Bread perhaps. But fruit and bread? I know of the Villacamba group in South America who are fruitarian... i've had a go at that 5-10 times.

        Very interesting point. If you want to argue that people should eat from their locale, then clearly they need to eat fat and blubber. The problem comes in when you are a transplant: a Russian stuck in Tampa, FL. An African stuck in Montana.
