in reply to CGI "control panel" app

what's wrong with cpanel or Plesk?

this is definitely not something i'd attempt to reinvent the wheel on.

Aren't those commerical software packages for managing web hosting accounts...?

My point wasn't so much the software package itself, as anonymonk pointed out, there are free open source versions.

My point was this: from what i gleaned from your post, it seems like it could very well be something that's already been done, tried and tested. So I'd probably put a little more emphasis on using an existing package and maybe hacking at the internals a little bit, if nothing else than for learning experience. Just my thoughts.

      meh.
No worries. It's a bit frustrating for me because I can see that I've completely mangled the asking of this question, and I feel badly that such a poorly asked question took up any of your time. I appreciate your kind assistance, though.

Believe it or not, I really was just asking if there was a way to execute a non-CGI perl script from a CGI, and jZed's reply has set me in the right direction. The whole control panel thing, and anything else that sounded like I was in need of some sort of package, was almost certainly due to my not knowing enough to be able to ask the question in a meaningful way. Sorry about that.

If there were a section on PM for "obfuscated questions" I'd no doubt be considered some kind of grand wizard!

and if they are? There are others, like webmin, ispmanager ....
        "and if they are?"

Well, nothing -- other than I wasn't asking about managing a hosting account. : )

Seriously, though, I do appreciate your suggestion. It was my bad for being unclear.
