It's what happens when you have a number of very smart people motivated by the best motivation in the world - peer recognition. (The beer doesn't hurt, either).
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
