in reply to problems passing to subroutine

Which subroutine are you attempting to pass a string to? Your snippet doesn't tell me what your problem is.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
