Glancing at the chatterbox today, I noticed that some of the higher-ups were pointing at nodes recently posted (usually buried in threads) as good nodes to consider in general (not for the PM section, that is!). I would figure that after a day of voting, such nodes will bubble to the top naturally, so I was thinking of how one might find such nodes. Since I only try to use PM a few times while at work (:D), it's generally hard for me to search for these nodes, and of course, without voting for them all, I won't see their reputation to beginning with, thus not knowing if they are high up there or not. In addition, if one goes on a trip for a few days, they might want to come back to see what the important points that were made through the week were.

I know there is a highest reputation node list overall on the site, but I'm wondering if it exists or is possible to create a page where the top N (20?) nodes for a given day or week are listed ? Obviously, you would not want to reveal the reputation of these nodes unless the person voted for them, so they would be displayed in random order; in addition, this means you would have to fix the value of N for all users as so that someone that might be trying to horde XP goes to try to figure out the exact reputation values by playing around with N. (Of course, on this point, this is NOT /., and I really don't see anything close to karma whoring, so this might be a non-issue). This way, for example, I can check in from home and see what high points were made, whether perl-specific or PM-specific.

    Best Nodes does a lot of what's being asked. The one whinge I have is that the cream of the crop is pretty short. I wouldn't mind it if the lists were longer, especially for best of all time. I gape in awe at Camel Code, take to heart the messages in Code Smarter and so forth, but a lot that's of value doesn't make it onto that list, and some older posts of comparable quality that don't get voted on any more won't be on that list (rep inflation). I guess what I'm saying is that I would find it useful to expand the capacities of Best Nodes to a certain degree.

    Other than that, there's the issue of displaying reps on nodes the poster has not voted on; well that seems pretty minor, and might not be worth the computational cost of implementing it.

    Underlying all this is that, as useful as changes like these would be, I'm not *so* attached to them that they should keep Fearless Leader from his life =)

      I also find myself missing some of those great old nodes. To me there's something more noteworthy about a node which gets 50 votes when the norm is 2 than one which gets 500 votes when the norm is 490.

      One way to deal with rep inflation might be to order best nodes of all time based upon the percent by which they outperform their daily norm rather than the total number of votes the post gets. This could either replace the existing best nodes of all time or be another way of counting, much like Saints in Our Book has two versions: the old (which doesn't appear to be updated) number of writeups measurement; and the new, amount of exp measurement.

        A "Great Nodes Through History" view would be an excellent addition to the historical record, and would doubtless surface some gems.

        I wonder, though, if such a page is best generated automatically, or by nominations and voting.

    This is exactly the problem I just faced. I go off to destroy my feet wandering across the island of Honshu and when I returned I could only get to the top 10 of the past week. footpad mentioned something of tilly's invention called the Navigator in a quick /msg session we had upon my return. I haven't found it yet, but I haven't tried too hard either.

    nevertheless, ++ for suggesting useful additions to the current system of cataloging Best Nodes. I'm sorry to see that some people can't seem to see the devil in your details.

      Perlmonks Navigator will let you see all past nodes in order. It has no ability to filter. For your need what would be ideal is the ability to go find the root nodes over a week and skim them.

      If you want you could easily duplicate this with a CGI, and then try to hook that into further functionality by trying to combine it with the XML tickers in some way, running a cron, etc.

      Ok, I forgot that there was the Week and Day there as well, however, it would still be nice to select a particul day or week for times when you are away for several days in a row.

    I also agree that Best Nodes is a little discouraging, especially if I have been away from PM for a week.

    I suggest adding a entry in the super search to search by vote score(I looked but did not see such a search option) so that one could pick a date range that you missed visiting PM, the select a vote level, this would allow one to instantly see all nodes over a certain vote level for a certain time frame.

    Just a thought.
