There is something weird going on. The use of @$, 0 seems to be implying the presence of a comma that isn't there:

push @$,0, 'fred';; print @$,0;; 0 fred 0 print @$,;; 0 fred

Very strange!

    You're assuming "@$," means "@{$,}" but it apparently means "@{$},".
