cosmicperl has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi All,
I've had repeated requests from some of my users to add community features to some of my scripts. Like those of myspace where people can add their friends and comments and alike. I was hoping that there would be something on CPAN that I'd be able to hack but my searches have found nothing. I thought if there is already a load of perl code to do similar things then someone here would know :)

Pointers much appreciated

Thanks
Lyle

The future has arrived! Back in the day I used to hear "we want to add some e-commerce features, you know, like Amazon." Or better yet, "we'll have a search engine with results as good as Google." Then I'd sit down with the client and walk them through a mental exercise starting with the questions "how much money do you think Amazon/Google paid to develop their system? How long do you think it took?"

Once you've gotten them to realize that there's no way you can replicate even a tenth of what MySpace offers you'll be ready to start gathering your real requirements. Maybe something the Kwiki or Scoop can help, maybe not. Either way, it sure won't be MySpace!
