Turn off automatic loading of images(in your browser preferences) is one thing. Maybe you can turn off the Chatterbox in your home node preferences too.

    you can even turn off most of the nodelets, and the top navigation. for the most important links you can use the free nodelet.

    What I noticed earlier was the overall length of the page; that is, loading all the messages before the submit-new-post box.
