FWIW, this is a perl bug and is fixed in 5.8.9. You can explicitly say qr/(?m:^def$)/ instead in 5.8.8.

Thanks!! The alternative version works perfectly. Unfortunately, I don't like my chances of getting our servers upgraded to 5.8.9. We are still trying to get production off 5.6!! Gary	[reply]
