Web service - two access methods (SOAP and HTTP)

pseudomonas has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear Perl Monks,
I'm trying to make use of this text mark-up resource with perl, through the proper mechanisms - no screen-scraping. Two methods are provided for - a SOAP webservice interface and a plain-ish HTTP one - both linked to on the page. Both seem to work fine with the sample Java code provided.
The SOAP interface I have problems with because it has two files - a wsdl file that I know how to handle (or at least pass to SOAP::Lite or SOAP::WSDL) and a server-binding.xml that mystifies me rather. If I just use the wsdl file, the queryPmid and contact methods don't work for me (though the getPipelinesStatus does).
The HTTP interface I've also tried, and I can't get HTTP::Request to deal with the chunked/POST combination.
Does anyone have ideas about what I might be doing wrong, or which of these approaches is likely to be most tractable to further effort?
