The last post being about "version control systems" - isn't it time we (somebody) gitted (or subverted, or recasted, or such) "poll ideas quest 2007" up to "poll ideas quest 2008", tagging the old and opening a new branch?

I don't think we need to start a new poll ideas quest every year, that'd just make it difficult to find old poll ideas both for those who want to check for a dupe poll idea and the pollsters who set up polls.

I petitioned the gods for a new poll ideas thread in 2007 because the old one was almost as large as the thread that must not be linked. If the thread is so large and loads so slowly, that makes it more difficult to post or read poll ideas and might actually discourage people who would want to post their ideas. The poll ideas quest is an "eternal" thread just like the thread that must not be linked.

See also the other discussion on starting a new poll ideas quest thread.

Update: on the other hand, the 2007 thread is now also getting large, it's nearly half the size of the thread that must not be linked.

So, if we start a new quest, what do we do with the old suggestions?
    1. Move all direct replies that are dated 2008 to the new quest
    2. Move all ideas that neither were warped into polls nor abandoned to the new quest
    3. Don't move anything at all
    4. Cowboy Neal!

Leaving details aside, I like the idea ;-)

      Great poll :-)

Might as well make it 2009 at this point.

Whatever works best for whoever is actively working on polls.

At some point in the past, when it was pretty clear it wasn't going to fill up enough to be a hazard to the webservers, I'd planned to just rename it poll ideas quest 2007-8, but never got around to it.

You think that is bad? I can't find anybody who is using an SQL standard earlier than "SQL 2006"! And people are still using "COBOL 2002"! And then there is "C99"! Sheesh!

    - tye

      Er... well... I use FORTH-83 ;-)

Is that the OO version of COBOL with the C++ style // comments?

Well, one could write a little code to automatically retitle the Poll Ideas Quest for the current year;-).

We could just rename it "second poll ideas quest". :)

I think it makes sense to have a fresh new poll quest for every year. The reasons are:

    • keeps each year's thread a reasonable length
    • it's ok to repeat some polls after a few years, since opinions (and monks) change over the years, and it's interesting to see that too for some poll questions
    • it's really not that much trouble for a prospective poller to click two or three links to review past year's poll questions before posting their poll suggestion
    • using the "2007" poll idea quest thread makes no sense since it's 2008. It also makes Perlmonks look out of date to newcomers (either when they go to submit a new poll suggestion, or when they see a new post on it pop up in Recent Threads).
    • It's not sustainable to keep just one poll ideas quest thread going and going.

Why not make a poll with this question ?
