Kickstart has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Folks,

While I realize there likely will never be a Perl interpreter for PalmOS (though I'd love that, especially with a Tcl/Tk-style for Palm graphical display), I would still like to do some scripting on my Visor. Does anyone know of a half-decent editor?

Ideally, it would have these features:

I've looked all over the place and haven't found anything which comes anywhere near what I want ('pedit' is closest, but still a long ways away).

    The closest for scripting is PocketC, which you can work on the Palm/Visor itself.

    Look for the Keyboard Hack, which will get that keyboard layout. Everything else you will have to shop around a bit. You may want to get a LandWare GoType! or Palm/etc Stowaway keyboard.

    And hopefully, Perl 6 will have a Palm port!

      My previous workplace gave me a Go Type! keyboard as a going away present, for my Palm III. Trouble is, less than a month after installing the driver on the Palm, it locked up, requiring a reset. It did this three times in a row.

      These days, the Go Type! keyboard just sits there gathering dust. Anyone else have a similar experience?

      FWIW, I'm still using the 3.0 PalmOS.

        Try this:

        • Grab the latest drivers from Landware. Then remove all the drivers and back up your Palm. Install the ones you've pulled (pull the Hackmaster driver, too, and try that). The system shouldn't crash. You may have to hard-reset your Palm... sometimes cruft gets left behind.

        • Upgrade to PalmOS 3.3 -- Really. It's stable.
        • Contact Landware. They've been helpfull to me over e-mail when I spilled soda over my older GoType! Turns out that it's died then and there, and I had to replace it. But by then, the GoType! Pro were lower in price. :D

    Simon Cozens was working on this, but he got stuck. My recollection is that he couldn't get the lexer to fit into one of the Palm's little memory segments.

    Its to my understanding that porting Perl for the Palm would just be a plain pain in the ass. I mean Perl relies on the whole funcitonality *nix machines... I mean it could be done, but we are talking maybe having a perl expansion pack for the palm.

      Oooh, I can just see it now. Forget those silly Palms...we need a perl Springboard module for Handspring Visor. I'd definitely buy one, any other takers?
