EvanK has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I've written a perl script that offers ::ahem:: hints to hangman games. What it would do is take an input string, with letters you already have and underscores for the ones you don't, and compare them against words from a word list, then return the matches. Now, my question doesnt quite pertain to the script, but, does anyone know where I could find a BIG word list? I've looked for days and have only found one or two, but they cost money, and I'm looking for a free one. All help is appreciated.

I found the resource mentioned here very helpful. In searching for that point I also ran across this.

I recommend the ENABLE word list. (Scroll down to find it on the page.) The Moby set, which tye pointed out, is also very nice; there's a pronunciation list, a thesaurus, lists of common names, and other useful data.

Try searching for scrabble word lists. They typically have many more than a regular dictionary. I've used them succesfully in the past for similar scripts.

    try /usr/dict/words on a *nix system =)
