Bah. I've done this before and it worked.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?

    Sorry, I don't think so. Try it. You won't get a parse error, but you won't get foreign key constraints either. The docs are correct.
