Actually, if it really is _so simple_ and the rule is "use the first word" you don't need to specify the stop characters, greediness of the '+' will do the job for you: 
$teststring =~ /(\w+)/ ...

    yes you're right :(
    but keep in mind that I just started to work with RegEx's (as you have noticed by now ;P) so I don't know every possibility even with a documentation at hand.It's by far the most confusing thing I encountered since I started with programming ;) (and there are still much more confusing things out there *_*)
