One MS word-to-anything converter is wv (http://wvware.sourceforge.net) of which there seems to be even a windows version. wvText converts to text, wvHtml to HTML, wvPDF to pdf ...

Another one is antiword (http://www.winfield.demon.nl/), also available on many platforms
