10 years ago, sitting down with a book and learning perl would have been difficult w/o someone to ask questions to (or at least take a long time). I want to extend a warm thank you to all of us at the Perl Monks community for being so wonderful and helpful! We live truly in the information age, and a thriving, helpful community such as is here at perl monks makes all the learning I need to do wonderful! Three months ago I wrote my first "Hello world" CGI script in perl. And today, I am announcing the launch of my Outdoor Adventure Photography site:

http://wildernessfringe.com

features:

healthy mySQL database dealing with all the photogrpahers, images, descriptions, searches, etc.

image::magick manipulation of uploaded images (makes em into different sizes, and annotates them)

hoping to grow it into a great site here soon.

Again, this is sort of a rough draft, so I would appreciate any feedback that anyone may offer. The security is a bit weak I am sure, so go easy on me and don't REALLY screw with things, but please do hammer it a bit and tell me if you find anything!

And again,

Thank you PERL monks!

    Some observations:
    • Like the unobtrusive, but very functional search function that is always there.
    • It was very slow to load home page (see below)
    • The searches were very fast. Why would the searches be fast and the home page so slow?
    • There's no way to unselect the "Keyword" select when you decide to use the "Description" search. Maybe there should be a "nothing" choice at the top.
    • You used frames :( people won't be able to book mark. since you're using cgi, you could accomplish much the same thing with header/footer functions
Overall, a very nice effort for three months of Perl experience.

You may want to check out photo.net

Update:Selected "biking" from the keyword list but there were no matches. Typing a search term and getting no results is not a surprise. Selecting from a list of keywords you provide should yield some hits.

Update(2):Try this page for overall sight diagnostics. Ironically, this page has a javascript error which you'll see if your browser has debuggin turned on.

Hi Jeff, Great for a rough draft! A couple of things though:
    - the lhs frame screws up on my browser, because I have my text size set to v. large
    - if I select more than one keyword, it does an 'AND' search - would 'OR' be more intuitive? Output was
Sorry. No images were found by any photographer with any written description, and "climbing AND kayaking AND rafting AND sailing AND hiking AND runn +ing AND biking" keywords. Try a broader search.

    Good luck with it,

    andy.
