I had also thought of this, albeit not exactly in terms of inverse proportionality: but indeed in terms of a monotone decreasing sequence of horizontal space. However:

• we now have a solution, courtesy of ambrus;
• it can actually be adapted to do just the above, provided that the amount becomes constant from some point on - presumably zero.
