This is reading two lines from <BOX> into $can, and discarding the first. Just delete the second $can = <BOX>

Yes, FunkyMonk and ikegami are both right. I'm still puzzled, because of the times I seem to remember having to do it this way, but I'm not going to argue with results.	[reply]
