    Very handsome! But I think it might have been more fun if you had written the character codes in base 7 or base 9 instead of base 8. With base 8 codes it makes me wonder why you didn't do
    s/.../"\"\\$&\""/ege;
    which I think might have been a little more amusing and a bit more obfuscated.
      ooh - i like the double use of e. you can be sure i'll use that in future. or maybe base 7 or 9 using a different character range - letters or symbols perhaps.
