Hi, again.

As you can probably tell, I'm new (both to Perl and this site). So, I've been looking at the FAQ's and trying to get a feel for the way things work.

I've got a couple of questions about the Monastery Gates page.

1) I noticed that there are several sections to the site that don't appear on the Monastery Gates page, such as Snippets, Code, Q&A, Library, Perl News, Reviews, and Tutorials.

These look like they're updated regularly. Should they also be added to the Monastery Gates? If not all of them, then at least Tutorials and Reviews.

2) I noticed that User Settings lets you control which sections appear on the Monastery Gates and in what order, but I can't seem to add the above sections. Can I do so? If not, can we get that ability?

3) How come the "headlines" don't show all of the most recent postings? It looks like several have been left out.

I did notice that these sections are listed in your Newest Nodes page, but it looks like that's designed to show only the most recent topics while the Monastery Gates show many older ones.

Sorry if these are commonly-asked. I checked your FAQ's and searched for previous topics along these lines, but didn't find anything.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

Well, first off, welcome. While you're checking things out, be sure to stop by Turnstep's home node. He's collected a lot of useful information about the site and how to use it.

Let me tackle your third question first, for it may help you understand how the main page works. Nodes get voted on by other members and higher level members can "front page" nodes they really like. These appear on the main page and slowly scroll "down" as newer nodes get "front-paged." I'm pretty sure that's why you're seeing older nodes than those that appear in Newest Nodes. (BTW, don't forget that you can show up to two weeks of postings in Newest Nodes.)

For more information on Voting, check here.

The reason the "headlines" don't show all nodes is because not every node gets "front-paged."

As far as adding sections to the main page, I wouldn't mind seeing Tutorials and Reviews added; that might help people find some of the most helpful ones more quickly.

I'm not certain the other sections should be added, though I could see a case for Q&A and possibly Perl News

I think most experienced monks use Newest Nodes to stay abreast of developments in those areas.

If any new sections are added to the main page, I would expect User Settings to support displaying, hiding, and shifting the order of those sections as well.

Only certain nodes appear on the Monastery Gates. Higher-level users must "approve" a post before it may appear there. The idea is that the Gates may form a user's first impression, so posts that appear there are subjected to a higher standard.

Allowing a logged-in user to see any section on the Frontpage...sounds like a good suggestion to me. :-)
