bgi has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

hi,

i plan to write something for a automated backup to webspace. therefore i have two posibilities:

first is microsofts skydrive which provides a api but only 5gb space.
second is hordit which dont provide any programming interfaces but unlimited storage :-D

so im looking for a way to do my automated backups to hordit all for that. my unstanding of webdevelopment is quit low but i think that it must be possible to use the full acessible javascript files of hordit which obviously provide the core functions i need: login, upload, etc...

can anybody outline what i have to do and if its possible what i plan (just to prevent i waste my time with something impossible) :-D

You might want to take a look at Jungle Disk, both as an alternative (it uses Amazon's S3 platform for storage) and as guide how to build such an application (since the source is available under GPL).

Update: Oops, didn't look close enough. "Note: This is not the source code to the Jungle Disk software". The source appears to be unavailable.

Depending on what your Operating system is and what features your hosting offers you could look at using rsync, TimeVault etc. Have you searched the internet for a solution that matches your requirements and various constraints? There seems to be many solutions available, depending on what exactly you want.

Rolling your own solution using Perl modules (for example Net::FTP, Net::SFTP or whatever) is always an option, but perhaps not worth the development time (including lots of testing and debugging, you want your backups to work right;) if a solution already exists which suits your needs.

nope, i will prefer writing by myself, just for trianing :D
i try to explain what should happen when i start the script

it should log on to the website, upload the files and when possible check them with CRC or so...all automatic...
is this possible? if yes, please outline what i have to do

    regards
