You need list context to assign the capture(s) — note the parentheses around `$ports`: `my ($ports) = $args =~ m/-p\s+([-\d]+)/;` [download] Otherwise (in scalar context), you'd get whether the regex matched (thus the 1).	[reply] [d/l] [select]
