If they want to check out Perl's bona fides, point them to another government agency. The Census Bureau uses Perl, and there's a good article on O'Reilly, titled (surprisingly) Learning to Count on Perl at the Census Bureau.

O'Reilly also has an article on how the Federal Reserve Board uses Perl.

    Yes, and we used perl to implement the on-line Census 2000 form last year and had no security problems. We've used Perl/Apache implementations and Web Sphere for different projects and while they're all successful. the perl/Apache ones sure are cheaper.
