I cut my coding teeth on Perl last decade on a chat room a friend of mine wanted to run. At the time, I had fiddled a bit with C++ and JavaS‎crip‎t, but hadn't done anything more complex than a dice roller, so my first real project was in Perl. Since then, I've picked up several other languages and current work as a web developer in a company where I'm expected to mostly use ColdFusion, but Perl remains the language I turn to for my own projects.
