I look for other Monks homenodes (mainly those that are listed under "Other Users") regularly, sometimes there are interesting things on others public scratchpads, but often there is nothing. So maybe there could be a box near the scratchpad saying "0 Byte" or "empty" "nothing" e.g.?
btw: I just saw that a Monk had Scratchpad "None." ... Xaositect

Update: Thx for all your responses, feedback. I considered long before writing these, cause i wondered if I should bother this excellent community again with my "wishes, nitpicks". But i think sometimes new users see things that others are already used to and never think of it ...

Thanks in Advance MH

Or maybe just have the link not active if the scratchpad is empty?

If this were implemented (which I favor), I think I'd stop putting "Nothing on your scratchpad" on my scratchpad when I'm not using it.

    matze77,
I too refresh the chatterbox by randomly clicking on those listed in Other Users. It is a great way to learn about your fellow monks. I too was interested in a way to find interesting home nodes so I wrote Homenode Surfing. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to run the code because the PM Stats page has been "temporarily" offline for a long time now. I believe I still have the list of interesting homenodes on my scratchpad though.

IIRC, a patch was made (in late July?) to automagically create scratchpads when users were created. Previously, users had to specifically click on a link to create their pad. (So I believe that users created prior to a certain date who did not explicitly create a pad will display as Xaositect does, at least as of the time of this writing.)

And IIDRC, I am sure another pmdevil will correct me. ;-)

Maybe we need a Recently Updated Scratchpads list...

I like this idea... and would also like to see it spread to the Other Users section/nodelet. With a little bit of (private/display-setting?) CSS, it could be introduced without disturbing the appearance for other Monks that don't like an has something on scratchpad indicator. Other color, slanted text, or something like that... (symbol ∅ ?) Maybe, the notion of empty scratchpad could be loosened by consists of whitespace only?

A while ago, I pondered about the usefulness of a provides any content at all indication... It is interesting to see what new initiates have to say when they join the Monastery, but checking all those entries in Newest Nodes/Users mostly is a waste of time since they lead to an empty home node.
