That'd be a useless use of cat.
That's a dangerous use of mailx. Imagine if any of the lines of mailfile began with tilde!
You can send directly to mailx (notwithstanding the last comment) by opening it as a pipe. no need for the separate file.

I agree, but would argue with the last. Once sent to a pipe cannot be extracted. I would use a temporary file of variable to make sure my data is consistent before sending. EVERYTHING is dangerous if not used properly. However, this doesn't mean mailx shouldn't be used.	[reply]
