For reference: Inkscape 0.44.1 (Sep 25 2006) from Debian etch produced this png with the command line I gave above, and it displays the stars appropriately here.

Convert from imagemagick 6.2.4.5.dfsg1-0.14 (also Debian Etch) produces only one star. Your mileage varies.

    My mileage is that I only have encountered two SVG viewers/converters that don't give me many problems: firefox and gimp.

    Neither that handy for converting from another program.
