In a previous incarnation i.e. contract, I experienced a similar problem to yourself - but I'm afraid to say that, IIRC, our solution to the problem merely involved a global substitution pre-processing step ... until we found an undocumented feature of the application in question actually knew how to interpret Windoze-speak, ostensibly plain text, files!!!
Arrgghh, imagine the frustration - over and above having to use Windoze in the first place, that is.
