Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Is there a way Perl can send Text Messages to cell phones? We have a membership base of over 50k members who get emails from us for various reasons, some of which is when they have commissions available in their commission account. Some are when they refer someone and so forth. quite a few on these new servers, are saying they are not getting the emails, while we see them going out and have them CCed to a company email off server, so we can verify if there is a problem. We have been requested to send the notifications to their cell phone via text message.

So is there a way to just use the phone number and NOT know what provider they are with and send the message to their phone?

Thanks,
Rick

Yes. You buy database from all cellphone providers, that way you can query a cellphone number to determine provider, then you can see if they have sms gateway.

http://www.ozeki.hu/index.php?ow_page_number=425&page_name=sms_SQL_SMS i know there are several options out there for SMS capabilities and i believe most require you to run an sms server so to speak. an sms gateway, from which perl can send SMS messages. this was just a quick google search, but you could use sql through perl to send sms. or you could use LWP or WWW::Mechanize to access one of those send text message web apps such as vtext
