Anyone else notice the Perl Power Tools hasn't updated in a while? I've submitted ping for ppt and md5sum for PPT for unclusion, but received no response (Thank goodness for therapy! I'll be okay.).

Should PerlMonks offer Tom Christiansen the option of having PerlMonks take over or assist, moving/mirroring it into the monastary's Code Catacombs? Tom likely is busy (as we all are) and our combined assistance to a great idea may be appreciated.

The tools out there possess varying degrees of usefulness & portability, and certainly offer a myriad of styles and techniques. I use them on my NT/2K boxen for relative command compatibility a la my Solaris, FreeBSD, & GNU/Linux boxen w/o installing something like CygWin.

IMHO, this seems like a natural fit within the monastary. Many monks (like Abigail, tho not on lately) contributed and may offer reflections upon their work.

Thoughts?

Re: PPT inclusion in the Code Catacombs?

I don't want to get too far ahead of things as there doesn't appear to be a for sale sign on the PPT lawn yet, but I think this is a great idea for a number of reasons (leaving aside the fact that I think the PPT is a worthy project on its own):
    • It would be great to be able to point people to a solid product of all the meditations on Perl
    • This is not a monolithic beast of a product, but a large number of sometimes even tiny bit of useful code, something that could serve as tutorial fodder for all manner of monks
    • It would be well in keeping with the tradition of monasteries producing carefully made products
    • It would provide meaningful and productive activity for those who just bang around here all day praying for clever questions to answer, with nothing better to do that chat and avoid their real lives ;-)
    • The distribution might even include a note about the Offering Plate
Having said that, if this were to go ahead it should probably have a prominent location somewhat separated from the rest of the Monastery, and a group of monks would have to be appointed to supervise development, maintenance and testing, and I'd be happy to offer whatever assistance I could.

I'd like to be able to assign to an luser

I'm not saying we need to become squaters or anything (HHOK), but likely Tom is busy with something I heard referred to as 'life' (I've seen pictures).

I agree with your points. My proposal for the Code Catacombs was just a logical inclusion to the fabric of the Monastary. Having it external or with it divided from the rest is dandy, too.

It would, I think, make a fine project for those needing one. Indeed, many may have submitted to the project but wait in limbo as I do. And I encourage folks tracking this thread to head out and check it out! See the links above, share, and enjoy!
