    I have my trouble with the "should" part of your question. AFIK, Perl guarantees only that the variables are destroyed by the end of the program.

    No. If they have "leaked," they are by definition inaccessible to your program. Are you really having such a problem?

    Update: But it looks as though you can count them, even though you can't list them. See moritz's answer below.
