in reply to A sad day comes...

This is one of the many things that I think a wiki would be ideal for.

Last I heard vroom's wiki implementation still needed better permission denied messages, executive decisions on who can create them, and a few shortcuts from jcwren need to be added. This was a few days ago.

Where a wiki beats the current system (IMHO) is for the development and maintainance of content that is useful for the whole community. Things like your proposed classic nodes, FAQs, introductory documentation, tutorials...

The current system is (IMHO) much better for discussion, question and answer sessions, etc.

So the wiki would be a very small portion of the overall site. However it would be best for a very valuable portion of the site...

I also noticed that you can reply to a wiki node if you know what you are doing (sort of "security through obscurity") -- well, there might be a security check at the tail end of the process since I didn't commit my reply due to the current state of things.
