There are two great "side-effects". First, if you do end up finding a bug, you already have a test script to send the module maintainer (and possibly to use while fixing the problem) and second, you end up with a test script for a possibly undertested module. Which you may send the maintainer as well to include in the distribution.
If the documentation is lacking, it's likely the tests are as well.
