/PAT/ (m/PAT/) is the match operator. qr/PAT/ compiles the pattern and returns the pattern without doing any matching. perlop
$ perl -le'$_="abc"; print /(.)/;' a $ perl -le'$_="abc"; print qr/(.)/;' (?-xism:(.))
