Sifmole has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Have opinions changed regarding ActiveStates Komodo IDE, since Dec. 2000? I have recently downloaded the NT version and have so far not been particularly impressed. I must state however that I am a *nix, Vim developer who hasn't been fond of IDEs since his college Borland Pascal days.

Any other reviews or opinions out there?

Sincerely,
Sifmole

    I downloaded it this afternoon and am more impressed with in that I was with Beta 4 (about 3 weeks ago). It's got some nice features.

    However, It is still quite slow and unresponsive sometimes and it takes longer to open up and perform certain operations than it does with a simple text editor. I am not sure, but I think I still prefer UltraEdit over Komodo.

    I still think it has the potential to be a great IDE, but it's not there yet. The biggest reason is speed. I don't expect any program to bring a PIII 700 to it's knee's, but it does. There are a lot of nice features though, and the built in debugger could be great if it wasn't dog slow. There's still way to many bugs for it to be realease worthy though. I know that marketing people and developers don't always see eye to eye, but I don't think it should have gone out the door in the state that it's in. So.. it will mostly collect dust on my machine until it's faster. GVIM still get's the job done..

    I downloaded an early version of the beta, and I wasn't overly impressed. It managed to
    bring my system to a screeching halt, so I un-installed it. I also wasn't to crazy about
    having to install ActivePython on my system, just to make it work. On the other hand though,
    the overall features were pretty nice. I would give it an overall grade of a C.

    I would second the first 2 opinions above: usable but not impressive.
    Sluggish. Debugger loses control. May have to exit Komodo to stop an errant debugger process. Variable display unreliable.
    print "yes? "; my $answer = <STDIN>; print uc $answer;
    Where is an interactive script supposed to read the stdin? Apparently not in the output window which seems to be read-only.

    Oh, and there is the Rx Toolkit which colors the regular expressions in pale green and light gray.

    I tried it after reading a recent thread here. I was very let down. Not only was it slow, but the syntax highlighter wigged out and decided that 80% of my script was something other than what it was. I think the parser lost it on a regex, but I'm not sure. I do remember that it was Komodo's fault, not my code ;-)

    I've just tried to use it again and it tells me that my license has expired and I should buy one. Oh well, back to vi and PFE.
