Just to make a reference:

$foo = 1;    
$fooref = \$foo;      #a reference to $foo
$foovalue = $$fooref; #de-reference $fooref
[download]

That's how it works with scalars. With arrays:

@bar=0..10;
$barref = \@bar;
@barvalue = @$barref;
[download]

You see? Use the backslash for making the reference, and precede the reference-scalar with a $,@ or % (hash) to get the values.
