Covered in A guide to installing modules for Win32 from Modules: How to Create, Install, and Use which I've told you about many times, most recently Re^9: Using Text::CSV, posted three days ago.

Update: The title of your post is currently "ActiveState Perl - manual module download" yet you ask about installing, not downloading it.

STEP 1: Download Nmake from http://johnbokma.com/perl/make-for-windows.html
STEP 2: Install the executable and you will get two files - NMAKE.ERR & NMAKE.EXE
STEP 3: Copy both the files to the /bin directory of your perl installed location. In my case, its C:\Perl\bin
STEP 4: Download the perl module from CPAN
STEP 5: Extract the module in some folder, preferably in C:\temp folder
STEP 6: Open command prompt and browse to the temp folder and into the extracted module folder.
STEP 7: Run perl Makefile.PL, nmake, nmake test and nmake install

Alternatively get dmake and a C compiler:

ppm install mingw

then use cpan from the command line. See Re^4: Activestate Perl module upgrade assistance

The cpan that comes with AS 5.10.1 will automatically download dmake and mingw if you don't have it.

You don't say WHAT module that you would like to install that you can't find on the ActiveState archives. I just queried the ActiveState default repository and came up with 11,367 entries. That is a lot!! That's a whole lot of stuff!

There are reasons to install packages that aren't in the ActiveState library. And I've done that. BUT this requires more work than just "point and click" -> sometimes just "more work", sometimes "a LOT more work".

Oh, on any Windows box >= NT, the command prompt is NOT DOS! I run a program called DOSBox to emulate DOS on my 2 Ghz Win XP machine and it can barely do what a 166 Mhz DOS box can do. If you want a *real* DOS box, I have a pre-production IBM PC, 6 Mhz.
