What goes into this

Downloading the TinyMCE JavaScript file/distro onto the PM server
Either allow users to add the initialization script tags to their freenodelet, or add it as an option in user settings, etc.
Configuration is merely editing the JSON when you initialize the script.
Come to a consensus on a default view of it. I vote "Advanced", as it allows users to turn off the WYSIWYG editor and edit the HTML if needed.
The BIGGEST issue I've had is getting it to show the text you need to type *above* in order to not be writing your node in your signature.

This is going to be short and sweet, I'm running late to class :-P

I've attempted to add TinyMCE integration in a sane manner to PM so that users can Just Type in a wysiwyg manner. Turns out the "simple" variation of TinyMCE doesn't allow you to disable it. It also by default seems to start you typing in the middle of your signature.

jdporter suggested I post here to get some wider exposure. Thoughts on a solution? The "Advanced" mode allows you to turn it off, and I figure we could hack it a bit to save a cookie to remember this setting.

If this will reduce the number of times I see a "Please remove PRE tags" consideration, then I am all for it! On the other hand, does this mean that I will need to enable JavaScript to use it? If the answer is yes, is there any thought toward running TinyMCE in it's own JavaScript-enabled sand-box, separate from the rest of the Monastery? Or encapsulating the call so that JavaScript is only turned on for the duration of time I am using TinyMCE? I guess I am just getting crotchetty in my old age; all this New-fangled Ajax-y mark-up make me twitchy. (Now there's a thought -- am I turning into a Luddite Geek? "If it was good enough for Sir Tim back in ought-nineteen, then it's good enough for you, you Young Turk!!" Now where did I put my wooden mouse and keyboard? ) ---- I Go Back to Sleep, Now. What is the reason PRE tags don't behave like CODE tags? I think we should nip this in the bud once and for all	[reply]

when you get a chance, please post a lot more detail on what is involved with this. how it's integrated, what the ramifications and impacts would be, both on the PM engine and on the user experience. I really want to see your analysis. (Not that my seeing it matters; but I think the gods would want to see it too.) That will be a good starting point for a discussion. Between the mind which plans and the hands which build, there must be a mediator... and this mediator must be the heart.	[reply]

I've updated the node, is this what you were looking for? It's really just a drop in doing. The hard part will be getting a consensus on how to allow users to USE it, and how to allow users to disable/not use it. mtfnpy	[reply]

I feel very strongly that this is a Good Idea for PerlMonks, and I hope we can start moving forward on it. Yes, it needs js to work, but it degrades gracefully if js is turned off. That is, current behavior remains completely unaffected if js is turned off. I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.	[reply]
