On Windows, running that will show a command prompt and wait for me to hit enter. I can't imagine a linux box not doing that...

    It won't.
      Why would you use a GUI on Linux anyway?

        To be able to run Firefox and Thunderbird, and to move xterms around as needed. That's it, basically.
