it isn't the fact that it allows you to interface to the external world.....Perl lets me do that right now by writing directly to any memory address, which then all it needs is a PCI board, or just write to the good old Parallel port addresses and hook them to optoisolators thru a hacked printer cable. ...so why would i need another abstraction layer of software to write bit flips?

.... the real test is can the lang prevent and/or automatically recover from system memory overruns or processor hijacking, and all that good hacking stuff, that you must design for in the real world..... as opposed to the win32 philosophy ;-)

...as far as that goes, i am quite happy with my experiences with Perl under Linux, and probably would risk my life that my program would perform well enough to gaurantee my safety..... however, that would preclude running other complex software simultaneously, which is connected to the internet...like web browsers running javascript.. :-)

      .... yeah, if you want to get a job.... if you go looking for a job, what is better?

      to claim to know an experimental language, or to claim to know what they use to run important automation?

      ...i guess in the ivory towers, Go may be interesting , and may introduce some new concepts, which may be useful in the future.....time will tell won't it?

        Okay, I get your drift now.

        Though I would have assumed that with the exception of the embedded market place, most low-level physical interface work is done in device drivers. Especially under multi-tasking OSs. As such, in the current environment and increasingly in the future, knowing a general purpose systems language with clean, effective and simple concurrency primitives would be fair more valuable than ADA.

        My breif daliance with ADA a few years ago left me shell shocked by its verbocity and pedantic complexities. The nearest analogy I can come up with to describe ADA relative to most other languages, is it is like flying a helicopter compared to flying a plane. So full of interdependant controls that require constant micro adjustments that the effort of flying the thing (constructing syntactically valid programs) is so great, you have little brain power left for thinking about anything else. Be it enjoying the veiw, or obtaining and retaining an overview of the program.
