Why is my Experience going up so fast? I got two points for being here, and an average of 1/3 point for each of 16 Reputation votes, so I should have about 7. Instead I already have 15, in just a few hours. Where would the others be coming from, assuming the writup is correct and the random numbers uniform?

Second, I saw an XP box appear once, saying I had a change and telling me 5 more points 'till I can vote. But then it went away again. Is this something that appears once when it does change, and then goes away next time a page is loaded whether I noticed it or not? The docs say it won't appear at all unless voting is possible (and not used up for the day).

The xp can be just good luck. If you flip a coin 50 times it might turn up heads 50% of the time, but the first 10 tosses might be heads. update: lemming might be right...you get all kinds of extra goody exp early on, like voting-out bonuses.

The XP nodelet is there when you gain or lose xp, or when you have votes left. Xp losses and gains only appear once and are lost with each page load.

I think initiates get an XP just for posting. And IIRC, you always get an XP for the first ++.

You are correct in that the XP box comes only when there is a change. You can find out your current XP and Level on your home node (look for the link above that is your username).
