Actual culprit is below line which is replacing some of the characters like 'l' or 'c' with null values. Is there any alternative for this... 
$ans =~ y/[[:space:][:cntrl:]]//d;

    Yes:  $ans =~ s/[[:space:][:cntrl:]]//g;
