For me, it is more important to know that there are new notes on a thread than to be given many redundant references to the thread. For once I revisit the node, I will look at all new notes there.

Take a look at this new notes output:

by gaudior Re: compressed? JAPH by no_slogan Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by mirod (arturo) Re (3) : New perl student... feeling stupid by arturo Re: Perl Module Education by radman Re: Program Repair Shop and Red Flags by Dominus Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by diarmuid Re: Re: Re: Simple Question for you guys. by AidanLee Re: Re: Re: Simple Question for you guys. by voyager Re: TPJ Subscription Question by $code or die Re: Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by Tanya Re: Re: Another golf style? by Brovnik Re: Re: The right way to avoid an error by diarmuid Re: Re: Simple Question for you guys. by Buckaroo Buddha (boo) Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by boo_radley Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by AidanLee Re: Re: Re: Simple Question for you guys. by voyager Re: The right way to avoid an error by arturo Re: The right way to avoid an error

If this were compressed into only showing the thread for each of these notes we would have:

JAPH by no_slogan Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by mirod Re: Perl Module Education by radman Re: Program Repair Shop and Red Flags by Dominus Re: Re: Re: Simple Question for you guys. by AidanLee Re: TPJ Subscription Question by $code or die Re: Re: Another golf style? by Brovnik Re: Re: The right way to avoid an error by diarmuid (boo) Re: New perl student... feeling stupid by boo_radley Re: The right way to avoid an error

Actually, this might be possible with a few (more) tweaks to Super Search, which currently lets you constrain searches on Date and restrict searches to Notes (aka Replies).

If, as been recommended before, we added:

    • The ability to sort super search results.
    • Included authors in the result list
    • Were able to constrain searches on relative dates, such as:
      • In the last hour
      • In the last day
      • In the last week
      • In the last month
      • and so on
    • Were able to link to Super Search results, e.g. the query could be expressed as a GET query

Then, you'd be able to design a Super Search along these lines *and* save it to your Personal Nodelet.

Similarly, you'd be able to some variations on the theme that others might find useful as well.

In the mean time, you might be able to rig your own solution based on tilly's Perlmonks Navigator or epoptai's xNN.

Theoretically, you could reduce this to the point such that the page only shows a pointer to a root node when some element in that thread has been changed or updated.

But then once you go to the thread, how do you know what to look for if you are trying to find the new information, unless you've been reloading the thread consistently?

I like the idea of "subscribing" to a given root node, and receiving /msgs when it is updated -- an idea that's been tossed around before.

Also, your idea would make it much harder to personality-vote on posts and we can't have that. :D
